EP 772: Simple Running. Powerful Living

Trail Runner Nation •

In this episode, we are joined by Michael Miller to discuss his book Run Like a RarĂĄmuri : Stories and Wisdoms from the Sierra Tarahumara and Running Long and his deep connection to the Indigenous RarĂĄmuri "running people" of Mexico's Sierra Tarahumara. Drawing on years spent living among the community, Michael shares how running is woven into their social fabric as a celebration of resilience, nature, and togetherness rather than competition or performance. The conversation explores powerful cultural concepts like korima, the practice of sharing without expectation, and how movement in nature can restore balance and contentment in modern life. Michael also reflects on the legacy of Micah True (Caballo Blanco) and the evolution of the Ultramarathon Caballo Blanco race, which now brings together runners from around the world while supporting local communities. We consider what trail runners can learn from the RarĂĄmuri about simplicity, presence, and reconnecting with the deeper purpose of running. Ultimately, the discussion suggests that "running like a RarĂĄmuri" is less about technique and more about learning to live with gratitude, connection, and joy.

What Trump Didn’t Know About Iran

The Ezra Klein Show •

The Trump administration miscalculated how Iran would respond to this war. And the United States, Iran and Israel were brought to the brink of war in the first place because of a whole series of misjudgments and miscalculations going back decades.

Ali Vaez is the Iran project director at the International Crisis Group. He was involved in the negotiations that led to the 2015 nuclear deal, and is in fact himself a nuclear scientist. He’s also an author of “How Sanctions Work: Iran and the Impact of Economic Warfare.”

In this conversation, Vaez explains how over 47 years the United States, Israel and Iran came to one another as threats, and why so many efforts to thaw relations failed. It’s the briefing on Iran that Trump should have received before he decided to go to war.

Keir Starmer: Britain’s passive Prime Minister?

The News Agents •

Just over a year ago, Lewis spoke to Gabriel Pogrund and Patrick Maguire, co-authors of the authoritative account of Keir Starmer's rise to power 'Get In: The Inside Story of Labour under Starmer'.

Their book shone a light on the weird political inertia at the heart of the Starmer project, often lacking in instinct, allies, and any particular ideological belief. Morgan McSweeney was the driving force behind the operation that thrust him into Downing Street - his authority draining the second he picked his cabinet.

McSweeney is now gone. The Mandelson scandal still poses a potentially existential threat to Starmer's premiership. The UK has been sucked into a conflict Starmer did not want to fight. The local elections in two months' time look like they will be brutal.

Gabriel and Patrick have just released the updated paperback edition of their book. Does it take us any closer to understanding who is the real Keir Starmer?

185: MacBook Neo Is Here — Should You Buy Apple’s $599 Laptop?

The MacRumors Show •

On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss first impressions of the MacBook Neo, Studio DisplayXDR, and iPhone 17e.

Following its announcement last week, the ‌MacBook Neo‌ arrived this week. Unlike every other Apple silicon Mac, the ‌MacBook Neo‌ is powered by the A18 Pro chip originally developed for the iPhone 16 Pro, making it the first Mac to use an iPhone-class processor instead of an M-series chip.

To reach its substantially lower price point, the ‌MacBook Neo‌ makes some compromises. Unlike the MacBook Air, it does not feature keyboard backlighting, a haptic trackpad, P3 wide color, True Tone, ambient light sensing, a camera indicator LED, MagSafe charging, Thunderbolt connectivity, or a 12-megapixel camera with Center Stage, nor does it come with Touch ID as standard. It is also thicker with a slightly reduced battery life, and has larger borders around the slightly smaller display.

That being said, it is $500 cheaper than a ‌MacBook Air‌ and is designed to compete with lower-cost Windows laptops and Chromebooks, while expanding the Mac lineup with a substantially more affordable option. We talk through the real-world impact of some of these compromises, including performance with the A18 Pro chip and 8GB of memory.

The ‌iPhone 17e‌ retains the same design and price as the iPhone 16e but adds the A19 chip, ‌MagSafe‌ support, Apple's second-generation C1X modem, and 256GB of base storage. Apple also introduced a new ‌Studio Display‌ XDR model, replacing the Pro Display XDR. The new model offers a 27-inch 5K mini-LED panel with up to a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR brightness up to 2,000 nits, and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity. We compare both of these new products to their predecessors, as well as the ‌iPhone 17e‌ and the ‌iPhone 16‌ as the two lowest-cost iPhones on sale today.

All of the newly announced devices became available to pre-order on Wednesday, March 4, with the entire lineup scheduled to launch and begin arriving to customers on Wednesday, March 11. The MacRumors Show has its own YouTube channel, so make sure you're subscribed to keep up with new episodes and clips.

HermĂšs

Acquired •

In luxury, there’s Hermùs
and there’s everyone else. Stewarded by one French family over six generations, Hermùs sells the absolute pinnacle of the French luxury dream. Loyal clients will wait years simply for the opportunity to buy one of the company’s flagship Birkin or Kelly bags. Unlike every other luxury brand, Hermùs:

  • Doesn’t increase supply to meet demand (hence the waitlists)
  • Doesn’t loudly brand their products (IYKYK)
  • Doesn’t do celebrity endorsements (stars buy their bags just like everyone else)
  • Doesn’t even have a marketing department! (they barely advertise at all)

And yet everyone knows who they are and what they represent. But, despite all their iconoclasm, this is not a company that’s stood still for six generations. Unbeknownst to most, Hermùs has completely reinvented itself at least three times in its 187-year history. Including most recently (and most dramatically) by the family’s current leaders, who responded to LVMH and Bernard Arnault’s 2010 takeover attempt by pursuing a radical strategy — scaling hand craftsmanship. And in the process they turned the company from a sleepy, ~$10B family enterprise into a $200B market cap European giant. Tune in for one incredible story!

Then, researcher Julie Bedard breaks down “A.I. brain fry,” a new condition she and her colleagues studied among A.I. users at work. And finally, Casey shares his battle with Grammarly after the company used his identity in a new A.I. feature, without his consent.

How to Steal Giant’s 18 Free Watts, the CAAD14 Apology, and Pro Peloton Road Rage

Velo Podcast •

There has been an alarming amount of physical assault and middle fingers flying in the pro peloton lately. Last weekend, UCI race officials disqualified NSN Devo rider Kiaan Watts after he reached out and struck a competitor in the head mid-race. Just days later, British time trial champion Ethan Hayter earned himself a $645 fine and a docking of 25 UCI points for flashing his middle finger to a TV moto at 54 kilometers an hour during the Tirreno-Adriatico. Which begs the question: when was the last time you completely lost your cool mid-ride? In this week's episode, Mike, Lisa, and I share our own stories of frustration, adrenaline, and bad behavior. These are not stories any of us—well, maybe Mike—are particularly proud of, but it happens. Lisa details her dark fantasy involving spark plugs, and I pretend like I might actually have the courage to remove a mirror or two. Mike confesses to standing in an intersection in full Lycra and kinda, maybe, definitely threatening a driver. We want to hear about your frustrated moments with cars, so jump into the comments and let us know. This wasn't only a complaining episode, though. This past week was a massive week for road tech, and we had two incredibly different bikes to dissect. First up is the fourth-generation Giant Propel. Giant is making a massive aero claim of 18 watts saved. Is that even possible? I break down the fine print after cross-referencing three different press releases, and I talk about why I think it's actually quite likely—but also why you might not even need a new bike to take advantage of those 18 watts. The big news this week, though, is not about aero gains. I'm super excited to talk about the new Cannondale CAAD14 and why Cannondale is leading this launch with an apology. The latest model in this lineup is heavier than the last one, but that's not what the apology is about. There's also a showstopper brushed aluminum version, and we talk about why you can't buy it. Finally, we tackle a question from Velo editor Jim Cotton: When you are completely bonked, shivering, and staring blankly into a gas station aisle, what is your desperation snack of choice? Lisa has a jersey pocket recipe of marinated chicken nuggets that's either genius or offensive, while I rain on the parade with a more clinical eye for my choices. No surprise if you listen regularly, Mike chooses Monster. I also share a story about a near-mythical vending machine I encountered outside Vienna, Austria, around 1 a.m. near the end of a 200-ish mile ride. There's also some time spent on listener questions and comments where Lisa shares an absolutely outrageous opinion about downtube storage before Mike says he wants a leather-bound novel with his bike
or maybe just a paper manual. I also spend some time talking about the merits of the user experience as it relates to package design and high-end sunglasses, and we all confess to hoarding tires. As you wrap it up, we definitely want to know your take on Lisa's recipe, what you would have chosen from the vending machine, and how you feel about downtube storage. Chapters: 00:00 - Intro and road rage 11:50 - Gas station snacks of choice 23:43 - Listener Questions 41:17 - 4th generation Giant Propel and the 18-watt aero claim 50:04 - Cannondale CAAD14

The BIG problem with the CAAD14

The BikeRadar Podcast •

In this week's episode of the BikeRadar Podcast, Jack and Simon kick things off with the launch of the new Cannondale CAAD14, where they discuss the welcome return to a more traditional aluminium frame design, and the eye-watering £7,500 / $7,499 / €7,499 price of the top-spec model.  Next, with Continental launching a new 35mm GP5000 S TR and 30mm TT tyre, the pair discuss whether even wider tyres set to become the new normal in pro racing. In Rant of the Week, they tackle the prickly issue of their flawless dress sense, before wrapping up with an overview of Wheeltop’s groupsets – and why these cheaper, highly programmable drivetrains could shake up the dominance of Shimano and SRAM. Michael Fox - Overweight to 2:19 Marathon, High-Mileage Training, and Parenting Through Marathon Pursuit

Sweat Elite Podcast •

Episode Summary

Irish runner and content creator Michael Fox joins Matt to discuss his unconventional path in the sport. After early success as a teenage 800m/1500m runner, Mick drifted away from athletics in his 20s - moving to Australia, gaining around 30 kg, dealing with injuries, and switching focus to cycling before eventually finding his way back to running.

He recounts his return to the sport and debut at the 2018 Dublin Marathon in 2:40, followed by several frustrating blow-ups while trying to improve. During COVID lockdown he leaned heavily into high mileage, including multiple 100-mile weeks, which helped unlock a new level of endurance and led to major progress - improving to 2:33 at Belfast and eventually running 2:19 for the marathon, though not without more setbacks along the way.

Mick discusses becoming somewhat mileage-obsessed, then later working with a coach to incorporate faster work and more half-marathon focused training to complement his endurance. He also shares how he balances training with running a full-time sports massage business, raising three kids, and operating on limited sleep, crediting his wife's support and occasional altitude camps as key pieces of the puzzle.

The conversation also touches on social media dynamics in running, outspoken opinions online, content creation, and dealing with backlash - including reactions to his gel-fueling videos. Mick explains his process for creating content, why he continues posting despite criticism, and his recent efforts to cut back caffeine and energy drink dependence. He closes by outlining his ambitions to push his marathon PB closer to 2:16.

Backyard Ultra Callouts, Snowdonia Controversy & Are Elite Runners Boring? | Long Run Archives #37

Singletrack •

In this edition of Long Run Archives, Finn Melanson is joined by Brett Hornig and Jeff Colt for a wide-ranging conversation about some of the biggest debates circulating in trail and ultrarunning right now.

We begin with a viral moment from the sport: Charlie Lawrence being called out to run a backyard ultra. Could a 100K record holder actually threaten the backyard ultra world record, or is the discipline too specialized for that kind of crossover? The group discusses what determines success in the backyard format and why the event continues to fascinate runners across disciplines.

Next, we explore a provocative question making the rounds online: are elite trail runners boring? Are influencers better storytellers than professional athletes, or is that narrative missing the point? Along the way we discuss historical tensions between performance and storytelling in the sport and what audiences actually respond to.

In the second half of the episode, we unpack two recent race controversies:

‱ Ultra Trail Snowdonia’s major course change after registration opened

‱ The possibility that the historic JFK 50 Mile could move from its traditional course due to funding disputes

What responsibility do race organizers have when circumstances force major changes after runners have already committed?

Finally, we play a round of Overreaction / Underreaction, reacting to statements like:

‱ Molly Seidel is already a Western States podium contender

‱ Jen Lichter could enter the top echelon of the sport with a Western States win

‱ Crowdfunded prize purses may surpass traditional race payouts

‱ Kilian Jornet could still win both Western States and UTMB in the same season

They compare 30/30s, broken-threshold efforts, over-unders, and longer race-specific combinations, talk through cadence, recovery, and execution, and explain how athletes can use feel as well as targets to get the intended adaptation. They also briefly catch up on Alex’s season so far, including racing, recovery, and lessons from recent setbacks, before returning to a practical discussion of how to make VO2 work more effective.

The U.S. Errors That Led to the Airstrike on an Elementary School

The Daily •

A continuing military investigation has determined that the United States is responsible for a strike that hit an elementary school in Iran, according to U.S. officials and others familiar with the preliminary findings. Iranian officials have said the death toll was at least 175 people, most of them children.

Malachy Browne and Julian E. Barnes, who have been covering the strike, discuss what probably led to one of the most devastating military errors in decades.

Guest:

  • Malachy Browne, the enterprise director of the Visual Investigations team at The New York Times.
  • Julian E. Barnes, a reporter covering the U.S. intelligence agencies and international security matters for The New York Times.

Sobriety, Relapse & Redemption: Rich Speaks On Shia Labeouf & What True Accountability Looks Like

The Rich Roll Podcast •

This is my first solo episode — and honestly, out of my comfort zone. Which is exactly why I needed to do it. The recent Channel 5 interview between Shia LaBeouf and Andrew Callaghan went wildly viral. Most of the discourse has been voyeuristic or vilifying. I wanted to do something different and use it as a lens to examine what addiction actually looks like in real time. As a recovering alcoholic, I know this territory. The grandiosity. The denial. The theater of contrition without any contrary action to back it up. This is a serious conversation about relapse, accountability, and what real change actually requires, including what it looked like in my own life. Anthropic doesn’t trust the Pentagon, and neither should you

Decoder with Nilay Patel •

My guest today is Mike Masnick, the founder and CEO of Techdirt, the excellent and long-running tech policy blog. Mike has been writing about government overreach, privacy in the digital age, and other related topics for decades now, and he’s an expert on how the internet and the surveillance state have grown in interconnected ways over the past two decades. I wanted to have Mike on the show to discuss the messy, fast-moving situation at Anthropic, the maker of Claude that now finds itself in a very ugly legal battle with the Pentagon. Instead of covering the daily drama, I wanted to dig in specifically on Anthropic's surveillance red line, and the important history and context around digital privacy in the U.S. that shapes how we should think about this going forward.  Links: AI bros wanted Trump — now they learn what happens when you tell him no | Techdirt OpenAI’s ‘red lines’ are written in the NSA’s dictionary | Techdirt Anthropic is suing the Department of Defense | The Verge Anthropic launches new think tank amid Pentagon fight | The Verge How OpenAI caved to the Pentagon on AI surveillance | The Verge Inside the backlash to the AI war machine | Platformer The Pentagon is violating Anthropic's First Amendment rights | FIRE Why the Pentagon wants to destroy Anthropic | Ezra Klein / NYT Subscribe to The Verge to access the ad-free version of Decoder! 5 Ways To Make Your Easy Runs Easier

Coach Bennett's Podcast •

Episode 140. 5 Ways To Make Your Easy Runs Easier

Your easy runs are your most important runs.

Why?

Well, because you're going to run more easy run minutes, meters and miles than any other minutes, meters or miles. And if you don't run your easy runs or don't run your easy runs the right way you'll never be able to run those speed runs and long runs as great as you could or should.

That's why.

And that's why I made this episode. Because if you can make your easy runs easier to run there is a better chance of you running them the right way and that means there is a better chance of you being able to run better speed runs and longs runs and if you run better easy runs and speed runs and long runs then you're going to be unstoppable.

So, yeah, this is a great episode. Hope you love it.

Cheers and thank you for listening.

Luxury Running Brands vs Ultrarunning’s Dirtbag Culture

Borderlands Trail and Ultra Running •

Legitimate dirtbag ultrarunners started wearing luxury running brands giving credence to a vision that endurance trail runners deserved too.

Presented by Kiprun.

But what is a Luxury Running Brand exactly and how do Luxury Running Brands coexist in trail running and ultrarunning culture?

There is tension here to be sure. The old guard wants to see the heritage dirtbag ethos preserved with a set of unspoken rules on how we 'should' be ultrarunners. And others, like Josh, think that ultrarunning is what makes someone an ultra runner, not the apparel or gear or whatever else.

Will Luxury Running Brands survive the brutal reality of the sport and those who fancy themselves gatekeepers? Or will it push through with no regard for what the naysayers think?

Are luxury running brands are here to stay?

It's probably too soon to say, but in this episode we explore:

  1. What is traditional ultrarunning culture?
  2. What is luxury?
  3. What is a luxury running brand?
  4. The appearance of authenticity vs. earned authenticity

Is Iran beating Trump in his own war?

The News Agents •

Trump has made it clear he thinks it’s time to end the war with Iran. There’s only one problem: Iran is not so sure it wants to. By using cheap, fairly low tech drones it’s managed to strike cargo ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The message it’s sending out is clear: we can disrupt the flow and the price of oil from our waters. The regime today has told the world to brace for the price of a barrel of oil to rocket to $200. It’s the last thing Trump wants to hear. So has Iran got Trump over a barrel (of oil)? And what, if anything, can he do about it?

Later, why Starmer has had his best fortnight in the job - and why Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch seem to have forgotten about the sovereignty they claimed was so important it made Brexit necessary.

War in Iran Triggers Chaos in Global Oil Market

The Daily •

As Iran has tightened its chokehold on one of the world’s most vital shipping routes and the Trump administration sent mixed signals about how long the war would last, oil prices have swung wildly.

Rebecca F. Elliott, who covers energy for The New York Times, explains just how much the world depends on that route — the Strait of Hormuz — and how quickly shutting it down can throw global energy markets into chaos.

Guest: Rebecca F. Elliott, who covers energy for The New York Times.

Is Trump running scared of his own war?

The News Agents •

In a zig-zagging, confused and at times weirdly low energy press conference from President Donald Trump last night, a remarkably new tone was struck on the conflict in Iran. Just hours earlier, his defence secretary Pete Hegseth had announced that this stage of the war was "just the beginning". But yesterday evening. Trump declared that the conflict was, in fact, "very complete"; at one point even downplaying the US attacks as "an excursion" rather than a war.

It doesn't take a genius to work out what's behind the volte-face - following his intervention, the price of oil plummeted. Welcome respite for the markets, but where does it leave Trump's war objectives? What does it mean for the Iranian people, who'd been promised regime change? Has Trump bottled it? And does that risk emboldening the regime in Tehran?

Later - why is white genocide being casually discussed on GB News? And why have Kwasi Kwarteng and Nigel Farage teamed up in a crypto venture?

The News Agents is brought to you by HSBC UK - https://www.hsbc.co.uk/

Is Trump blowing up the world economy - as well as Iran?

The News Agents •

For a Prime Minister obsessed with driving down the cost of living, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is shaping up to be something of a nightmare. Oil prices have surged, the Bank of England is now expected to raise, rather than cut, interest rates, and the AA is telling drivers to consider cutting down on non-essential journeys due to the price of the pumps.

The war has shown no sign of winding up - indeed over the weekend Donald Trump seemed to leave open the idea that it could last more than six weeks. Remarkably, his press secretary failed to rule out a return of the draft, not seen in America since the Vietnam war. Why? Because the desired endgame for the Trump administration is still very difficult to see. A new Supreme Leader has been installed and appears to be as hardline as his predecessor father. Iranian missiles are still raining down on the region. And if gas prices continue to squeeze Americans, could Trump find himself blinking first?

Later, Tony Blair's off the record remarks about Keir Starmer became very much on the record after his criticisms of the current Prime Minister's resistance to joining the US efforts in Iran made their way into the press. Jon and Lewis discuss why Downing Street is unlikely to be losing any sleep from the advice being dished out by its former occupant.

This episode of All In Triathlon is sponsored by Precision Fuel and Hydration. If you want to dial in your race nutrition head to https://www.precisionhydration.com and use the code allintriathlon at checkout for 15% off.

This week we break down the epic crit battle between Aaron and Brando. In what can only be described as the cycling equivalent of two mates refusing to let the other one win a town sign sprint, Aaron managed to take down Brando to claim this year’s very prestigious (and definitely very serious) crit champion title. The rivalry between Aaron and Brando continues, with bragging rights now firmly in Aaron’s hands
at least until the next rematch.

Jelle gives us an update on how training has been going since getting sick a few weeks ago and lets us know he’s now back on track as he builds toward his Geelong battle.

We also preview the world champs showdown between Jelle Geens, Kristian Blummenfelt and Hayden Wilde. Three of the best middle distance athletes in the world lining up against each other so early in the season should make for an epic race.

We also review the Ironman New Zealand results and finish off answering your questions.

324. The Strength Deficits That Cause Most Running Injuries

Running Lean •

Let’s talk about something most runners completely misunderstand: injuries.

Most runners think injuries are just bad luck.

Or maybe the result of running too many miles too quickly.

But in reality, most running injuries are predictable.

They’re caused by specific strength deficits that quietly undermine your running mechanics.

Weak hips.

Poor single-leg stability.

A core that can’t control rotational forces.

These weaknesses don’t just affect how strong you are — they affect how you move.

And when your body can’t control the forces created while running, something eventually breaks down.

In this episode, The Strength Deficits That Cause Most Running Injuries, I’m breaking down the key weaknesses I see in runners every single day — and how they lead to knee pain, hip issues, Achilles problems, and more.

Once you understand these strength deficits, you’ll start seeing injuries differently — and more importantly, you’ll know exactly what to do to prevent them.

Start The Leaner, Stronger Runner Project

If you’re putting in the miles but not getting the results you want
 something is off.

Maybe you’re running a lot but the weight isn’t changing.

Maybe you feel tired all the time.

Maybe running actually feels harder than it should.

And deep down you know this:

You shouldn’t have to grind this hard just to stay the same.

That’s exactly why I created The Leaner, Stronger Runner Project.

This is a step-by-step coaching program designed specifically for runners who want to:

  • Lose fat without sabotaging their running
  • Build real strength so running actually feels easier
  • Fuel their body properly so energy stays high and cravings calm down
  • Develop the mindset and habits that make progress stick long-term

This isn’t another random training plan or nutrition hack.

It’s a clear, structured coaching program that shows you exactly what to do — and why — so you can finally start feeling strong, lean, and confident again.

If you’re ready to stop guessing and start making real progress

Countries turn to emergency oil supplies. It won’t buy much time.

Apple News Today •

A continuing military investigation revealed that a deadly strike on a school in Iran was likely carried out by U.S. forces. Idrees Ali of Reuters joins to discuss how the school may have ended up on a target list.

Member countries of the International Energy Agency said they will release 400 million barrels of reserve oil as prices surge. The Wall Street Journal’s Matthew Dalton discusses whether the move can bring down the cost of crude.

Travel around U.S. is being disrupted as global events coupled with the DHS shutdown have left airports scrambling. Hannah Sampson of the Washington Post explains the challenges facing travelers.

Plus, deadly weather ripped through part of the U.S., Iran’s sports minister signaled that it might not compete in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, and the U.K. is removing the last hereditary lords from its parliament.

Today’s episode was hosted by Cecilia Lei.

87: Pediapal & Auralog – Adrian Eves

Launched by RevenueCat •

On the podcast: Adrian Eves about his path from Apple’s accessibility team to indie app development, building Pediapal and Auralog from personal health challenges. We cover lessons from launching, redesigning with Liquid Glass, navigating App Store features, and how community—from iOS Dev Happy Hour to Swift Sonic—has fueled his growth.

Top Takeaways:

đŸ€ Your community is your safety net

If you get laid off, it's the people you've supported who will support you right back, creating a crucial buffer during uncertain times.

😠 Turn frustration into features
The most compelling app ideas often come from solving your own, real-life problems, giving you an authentic perspective on what users truly need.

🚀 Ship it, then ship it again
Your first version won’t be perfect, and that's the point. The real work, and the best learning, starts after you hit publish and begin iterating.

đŸŽ€ You don’t need permission to build
If you have an idea that you're passionate about, just start building. Don't wait for the perfect time or an external green light.

💡 Spite can be a great motivator
A little bit of friendly competition or a desire to prove something can be the exact push you need to finally ship your app.

About Adrian Eves:

🚀 Indie App Developer and Creator of Pediapal, an app that makes it simple for families to track their child's health, & Auralog, a migraine tracker to help you take control of your migraines and headache history.
